The Silver Birch Centre, Crawley

Age UK West Sussex Crawley runs an Activity Centre for people aged 55 years and over. The Silver Birch Centre is situated in Shackleton Road, Tilgate and is open on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday every week.

Transport

Transport is provided for those who are unable to get to the centre by their own means. We currently have two minibuses covering the whole of the Crawley area and pick up clients from their own home in time for the start of Activity Centre at 10.30am.

Activities

On arrival our clients are greeted with a welcoming cup of tea/coffee and biscuits before starting the morning activities. These include dominoes, card games, brainteasers, guest speakers, arts and crafts, reminiscence club, singing club, computer club, armchair exercise etc.

Outings

Outings are also organised to garden centres, tearooms, museums, theatre etc.

Lunch

Lunch is served at 12.30 followed by afternoon activities (quizzes, bingo, sing along, raffles, etc) and refreshments. The afternoon finishes at 3.30pm when
the minibuses are ready to transport the clients back home.

Services

Shopping Service: This is an assisted service providing transport to and from local supermarkets for those who are unable to get there on their own.

Help at Home: This service provides assistance with housework and/or domestic tasks for those who need support in maintaining their home.

Community Clubs: We offer a variety of clubs within the Crawley community area for over 55s. These include Art & Crafts, Reminiscence, Computer Course, Out to Lunch Club, Mens Club, Swimming Club, Armchair Exercise Club etc.

Information & Advice: Age Concern Crawley offers assistance & guidance in many areas such as Pensions, Wills, Insurance, Benefits, etc.

Volunteers

Without the help of our volunteers we would not be able to provide a service!

Driver: we always need volunteer drivers to cover the busy transport schedules enabling our clients to attend the Day Centre.

Escort: we also need escorts to assist the drivers on all journeys. He/she helps clients on/off the bus as many have mobility difficulties.

Activity Centre Assistants: help in making drinks, serving lunches and encourage clients to participate in games/activities. The assistant also ensures any new client settles into the Day Centre and befriends others.

Also, kitchen volunteers, kitchen workers, group leaders and activity leaders.
