The Silver Birch Centre, Crawley

The Centre in Crawley runs an Activity Centre for people aged 55 years and over. The Silver Birch Centre is situated in Shackleton Road, Tilgate and is open on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday every week.

Transport

Transport is provided for those who are unable to get to the centre by their own means. We currently have two minibuses covering the whole of the Crawley area and pick up clients from their own home in time for the opening of the Activity Centre at 10.30am.

Activities

On arrival our clients are greeted with a welcoming cup of tea/coffee and biscuits before starting the morning activities. These include dominoes, card games, brainteasers, guest speakers, arts and crafts, reminiscence club, singing club, computer club, armchair exercise etc.

Outings

 

Outings are also organised to garden centres, tearooms, museums, theatre etc.

Lunch

Lunch is served at 12.30 followed by afternoon activities (quizzes, bingo, sing along, raffles, etc) and refreshments. The afternoon finishes at 3.30pm when the minibuses are ready to transport the clients back home.

Greens Direct the mobile greengrocery service will be attending our centre every Friday at 12 noon, They will be providing the finest fruit and veg from Covent Garden,  Fresh bread from Ardingly, Local free range eggs from Hurst Farm  Pasties, sausage rolls ,cakes all locally sourced, jams, chutneys and much much more!

Services

Shopping Service: This is an assisted service providing transport to and from local supermarkets for those who are unable to get there on their own.

Help at Home: This service provides assistance with housework and/or domestic tasks for those who need support in maintaining their home.

Community Clubs: We offer a variety of clubs within the Crawley community area for over 55s. These include Art & Crafts, Reminiscence, Computer Course, Out to Lunch Club, Mens Club, Swimming Club, Armchair Exercise Club etc.

Information & Advice: Age UK West Sussex has an Information and Advice drop-in service in Crawley which offers assistance & guidance in many areas such as Pensions, Wills, Insurance, Benefits, etc.

Foot Care

Regular foot care clinics with qualified podiatrist. Call for details £14.00 per appointment bookable in advance.

Chair Based exercise

Mondays 11.15-12.15 followed by lunch  £2.00 for exercise session  £4.00 for lunch, transport available £5.00 return or £2.50 each way.

Door to door shopping bus

to Tesco every Thursday. For those who wish to shop independently but need a bit of help carrying the bags .

Use our minibus to collect you and bring you home for just £5.00 contact Valerie North 01293 544144 for registration and further details.

Well stocked second hand clothes and Bric a Brac area in the centre including books and puzzles please come and have a browse. Profits to our cente.

Rolling programme of beginners and improvers computer tuition

Plus helpful computer drop in sessions for further details contact me. Beginners lessons from £5.00 per session when courses are booked and paid in advance.

Room Hire

Deposits (per rental)

Small Room: £25

Hall: £100

Hall and Kitchen: £150

Whole Building: £150 - £500

All payments must be made up front, with a 5% cancellation fee.

Charges

Classroom: £10 per hour

Hall: £12 per hour

Kitchen (Tea, Coffee and Cold snacks): £8 per session. People to provide own Tea and Coffee.

Kitchen full use: £9 per hour

Volunteers

 

Without the help of our volunteers we would not be able to provide a service!

Driver: we always need volunteer drivers to cover the busy transport schedules enabling our clients to attend the activity centre.

Escort: we also need escorts to assist the drivers on all journeys. He/she helps clients on/off the bus as many have mobility difficulties.

Activity Centre Assistants: help in making drinks, serving lunches and encourage clients to participate in games/activities. The assistant also ensures any new client settles into the activity centre and befriends others.

Also, kitchen volunteers, kitchen workers, group leaders and activity leaders.
